Home OUR MISSION
Our Mission

The Andrew Ortega Foundation was formed 2010 to raise awareness in an effort to prevent this tragedy from happening to others. We adhere to the core values of functioning with honesty and integrity, and our activities are focused on making a difference in the community.! Nothing less is acceptable. The Andrew Ortega Foundation is committed to preventing Sudden Cardiac Arrest/Death (SCA/D) in middle and high school aged children through awareness, education, screenings and action. The vision of the Foundation is to expose SCA as a grave health risk affecting young people.

We believe that awareness means:

  • That screenings must be standardized in all of our schools.
  •  That SCA occurs more frequently in our middle and high school aged children.
  •  That cardiac screenings are a necessary procedure to identify heart abnormalities which often leads to SCA.

Goals and Objectives:

The Andrew Ortega Foundation will achieve our Mission Statement and Vision through the following key goals.

  • Provide awareness and education of signs and symptoms of SCA to school administrators and educators, medical providers, parents and other members of the community.
  •  Coordinate efforts to provide (ECGs) and echocardiograms through screenings of youths to identify cardiac anomalies that may lead to SCA.
  •  Develop a comprehensive pre-participation history and physical exam requirements to be used by physicians for students participating in sports.
  •  Implement a program whereby all schools will require screening for all students who participate in organized sports.
  •  Facilitate CPR training for middle school and high school students and staff.

Operational structure:

The formation of the Andrew Ortega Foundation is new (established in 2010) and its structure currently remains small, and operates in committee fashion through standard nonprofit Bylaws and in conformance with not for profit corporation rules and Internal Revenue Code Section 501 (c)(3). 100 percent of all monetary donations are used to advance the mission and goals of the! organization, e.g., printed literature, efforts and equipment related to screenings, and related training, etc... . Sponsorships and grants are used to achieve specified goals described above.Transparency in operations underscores the Foundation’s financial procedures.

Strategic Plan:

A strategic plan is being developed, and measurable goals and results will be documented to evaluate current and future mission successes.

Funding Sources:

Funding sources are sought through sponsorships and donations. The purpose of all funding is to strictly facilitate the Foundation’s mission, goals and vision. 100 percent of all monies obtained are used to advance its projects. No salaries of any amount will be derived from the Foundation.
